Bishop's Notebook, 17 September 2003, Caserma Carlo Ederle,
Italy
“ I'm
posting this as I prepare to do the Confirmation for this
fledgling eucharistic community. Thanks to the "walk
about ministry" of Reservist CH Mike McEwen, an Episcopal
congregation worships where there was none before. This camp
is an hour west of Venice and 2 hours southwest of Avianno
and now has elements of its 173rd Airborne Brigade dispersed
from Liberia, to Afghanistan, to Iraq. It's the story of today's
military.”

“Back
on 6 October 2000 (if you check the topical index of this
Notebook) I reflected with you about Megan Grant, a Confirmand
from Gaeta, Italy, and how her chaplain, Bob Lawrence, and
her family, had provided the supportive
environs for her Confirmation. This comes to mind because
I have just returned from Ft. Bragg where Roger Kappel presented
eight persons for Confirmation and before that, during my
time in Japan and Korea, Rick Oberheide and Gerry Bebber gathered
Confirmands for the Church. Our
efforts in this regard are having mixed results, perhaps due
in part to my erratic visitation schedule, but mostly because
of a perceived lack of opportunity at the local level. ”

“Megan
was confirmed during the chapel service in Naples, Italy,
but she lives in Gaeta two hours away near Sixth Fleet headquarters
where her Dad, Larry, works. Megan was just back from running
a 5K race in Milan with her school. So in addition to the
drive down to Naples she was just off an 8-hour bus trip.
She looked tired but alert. It was appealing to hear her characterize
the Run not as winning but as 'I improved my time.' ”
